Junior League 2  : Bangor 3 v 1 Mossley

THIRDS SECURE IMPORTANT WIN

Saturday 13th October saw Bangor 3rds entertain Mossley 3rds, hoping to put there poor result the following week behind them. Once again, the thirds had numerous changes, with J McNaught, A McClemend & A Walker making their first appears of the season, and A Douglas and J Boyd returned after their absence the previous week.

With a small crowd staying to watch after the 1st XI game, Bangor set about their opponents from the start. The midfield worked tirelessly with R Parker, A McCausland & P Snodden passing the ball well and supporting the attack. Bangor were in control of the first half with A McClemend showing what a good player he was at right back, with superb tackling & support play. The defence of Captain M Coughlin, G Stubbings, A Douglas & A McClemend played well, easily coping with the few Mosseley counter attacks that came their way, leaving N Irvine in goal for a relatively easy, if not boring, afternoon. Up front, R Coughlin, A Walker & McNaught created several chances, but could not take any. At half time the score was nil all despite Bangor’s best efforts.

The second half started as the first half did, with Bangor dominating. Mosseley still held firm and rode their luck at times with their keeper making several superb saves. J Boyd was driving into the opposition circle with real purpose time and again and several short corners were won. Poor push outs meant that nothing came from them. With 15 minutes left and the scores still level, a J Boyd run into the circle ended up with a cracking reverse hit shot that hit the keeper, with a defender failing to clear, M Coughlin, the sweeper and captain, was at the back post to calmly slot home. 1 - nil.

With the deadlock broken, Bangor pushed forward for a second. More Bangor pressure led to several more short corners, and from one that was pushed out with purpose, J McNaught blasted home for his first of the season. R Coughlin grabbed a third for Bangor, finishing off a good team move.

With the score 3 nil Bangor were dreaming of their first clean sheet in nearly 2 years, Mossley began to push forward and create several chances. With several minutes left, a quick Mossley counter attack result with a forward having an open goal. Stubbings went to challenge the forward, but saw the ball flicked past hit towards the empty net. The Bangor captain arrived on the line just in time to try to deflect the ball away but could not get enough on it and the ball finished in net. The game finished 3-1 to Bangor. A good win & a good performance for the 3rds, who travel to Newry, for what should be a very tough game. But playing like they did on Saturday, they have every chance. Thanks to C Harte for umpiring.
