Junior League 1 : Bangor 4 v 1 Newry

On Saturday past, Bangor Seconds recorded their first victory of the season in a comfortable 4-1 win over Newry Seconds.

From the start, Bangor were the dominant side achieving mid-field supremacy through Brennan, McDowell and Ormsby.

Early on a pass in the circle found Clarke free, his shot hit the post, McIlhagga following up narrowly missed the rebound.

The Bangor dominance continued with the front three of Clarke, McIlhagga and Stranaghan running riot.  The superiority was rewarded on 25 minutes as Craig McDowell struck.  1 – 0 to Bangor.

McCafferty replaced Clarke and McClune entered the fray in exchange for McIlhagga.

Five minutes later the impressive Gowdy slid a pass to Stranaghan who in turn eluded the Newry right back and goalkeeper off loading to Kerrigan to score. 2 – 0.

Newry continued to strike on the counter but the Bangor back four of Kerrigan, Irwin, McCausland and Gowdy stood firm.  Thompson in goal was called into action on a couple of occassions dealing with the danger.

On 34 minutes McDowell received the ball on the half way line and surged in to Newry territory, a delicate pass was slipped to Stranaghan and then to McCafferty two yards out who guided the ball past the Newry goalkeeper.  3 – 0

To round the half off, Stranaghan slotted a short corner in the dying minutes.  4 – 0.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Bangor being the dominant team, Scales came on for McDowell and carried on the good work.

Bangor created a few chances but not as many as would have been hoped. The best chance coming when Clarke deflected a pass goal ward only for it to be athletically tipped over the bar by the Newry goalkeeper.

With 15 minutes to go McClelland replaced McIlhagga and Bangor continued to dominate with Newry restricted to play on the counter.

With 9 minutes to go, Newry managed to scramble an untidy goal leaving the final score as Bangor 4 – Newry 1.

Many thanks to Robbie McMinn and Bill Gowdy for Umpiring.
