Kirk Cup : Instonians 6 v 1 Bangor HEAVY KIRK CUP DEFEAT FOR BANGOR |
|
Bangor's search for a return to the semi finals
of the Kirk Cup came to an abrupt halt on Saturday when they were
soundly beaten 6-1 by Instonians at Shaw's Bridge.
Throughout the game the Old Boys were that little bit sharper, more determined and played better as a team - but the winning margin may have flattered them slightly. The Seasiders needed just a draw to get into the semi finals for the first time in three years but they couldn't manage it despite everyone running themselves into the ground. The Belfast side had too much experience and depth to their squad while Bangor were missing captain Adam Reading, Dave McClune and Andrew Gowdy. Instonians took the lead just 10 minutes in when after John Tormey had saved their first penalty corner Chris Kirk was allowed an age to pick his spot and fire the opener in on his reverse side. And although Bangor made the odd foray into opposition territory Instonians doubled their lead shortly before the break with a carbon copy of a second goal. Again Tormey saved and again his defenders watched as this time Robinson blazed home the rebound. Two nil down at half time and it all to do against the team that finished second in last year's premier league. And it got even worse for Bangor when Kirk grabbed his second from close range just minutes into the half and all but booked his team's place in the semi finals. Tired legs and a lack of options from the bench meant Instonians could really stretch Bangor as the second half wore in and it was little surprise as they added more goals. Julian Lewis, returning veteran Neil Cooke and Johnny Madill all got on the scoresheet to give the home side a six nil lead before Bangor grabbed a later consolation goal. Michael Harte, who plugged away all afternoon in midfield, and Steven McLean combined to play in Simon Hunter and he slipped the ball into the far corner from a tight angle. So the Kirk Cup campaign can be put behind them and Bangor can now look forward to starting the league season against Banbridge at home on Saturday. They also hosted Banbridge in the opening game last season and fought back well to draw 4-4. Anything similar this year would be gratefully received given the team's lack of a coach and disjointed pre-season. But the side will be aware that anything against Banbridge has to be earned.
