Chris Cargo & Ireland 'A' Congratulations once again to Bangor exile Chris Cargo who has recently been called up to the Ireland 'A' squad. Chris is now in the running for selection to attend the Celtic Cup in June as well as to play games against France A in early July 2009.
Annual Club Dinner Bangor Mens Hockey Club held their annual dinner last Saturday evening in the Marine Court Hotel, when the team player of the year awards were made.  It has been a difficult year for the club on the playing side particularly down the teams with the thirds, fourths and fifths all struggling in their respective leagues.  However, the first team have again cemented their place in the Premier League again this season with some fine league performances, particularly at home.  Indeed for long parts of the season it looked likely that All Ireland hockey may well have been coming to Bangor in the 09/10 season, but alas it was not to be as the squad came up just short.  Nonetheless, coach Robbie McMinn was thanked for his time, enthusiasm and overall organisation and effort he brought in his role as club coach.  Skipper Adam Reading was again instrumental in many matches at the top level, and was the overwhelming choice as the firsts player of the season.

In David Shields’ inaugural year as second team manager, the seconds competed well in Junior One and consolidated their position in the top half.  Andrew McCausland was their player of the season.  As mentioned earlier the thirds, fourths and fifths all struggled, however the player of the season awards went to Gareth Stubbings on the thirds, Nick Craig on the fourths, whilst Duncan Morris claimed the fifths award.

A word of thanks to Dave McClune for the organisation of last Saturday evenings event.

Cargo Gets Call Up Many congratulations to Bangor Mens Hockey Club exile Chris Cargo who played an inspired role in the victorious Ulster squad that won the Senior Interprovincial Hockey Championships in Cork last weekend.

Indeed it was only last week when the 23 year old, currently playing for crack English side Reading in the Slazenger English Hockey Premier League, got the belated call from the Ulster selectors following the withdrawal due to injury of Cookstown’s David Ames.  A quick flight across to Cork last Friday to link up with the Ulster squad, and things could not have gone much better for the lad.  In his full Ulster debut against tournament favourites Leinster on Saturday afternoon, he played his part in a great Ulster second half comeback scoring one of the goals as the province ran out 3-1 victors after trailing at the interval.  Banbridge’s Eugene Magee and Lisnagarvey’s Timothy Cockram were the other Ulster scorers.  That left Ulster needing just a draw to claim the title in Sunday’s encounter against host province Munster (Leinster had defeated Munster on the Friday evening), and despite one or two hitches, a 5-5 draw was the end result to the delight of the Ulster contingent.  Once again Chris got himself on the scoresheet to wrap up a tremendous couple of days, and fully justifying his selection in this elite group.  The other scorers for Ulster were a double for Peter Caruth, Jonny Quigley and skipper Mark Gleghorn.

So “Les” returned to his studies at Bath University this week with his head held high following his sterling performances, and having now represented Ulster at U16, U15, U21 and senior level over the past 7 years.

Having played at the highest level in England now over the past 5 years, first with Bath Bucaneers, and now with Reading, who incidentally also currently compete in Europe, it’s nice to see Chris is finally getting some reward, and who knows, maybe this could just be the start for the former Bangor player?

Everyone connected with Bangor Hockey Club congratulates Chris on his success last weekend, and indeed if he is ever is to return home to the Ulster Premier League, he can be sure his hometown club will always welcome him with open arms.
