Junior League 3 : Bangor  8 v 0 Down

BANGOR SECURE COMFORTABLE WIN

Bangor Hockey Club’s fourth team swept aside Down second eleven with an emphatic 8-0 victory in last Saturday’s Junior Three clash at Bangor Sportsplex.

From the outset, the home side were just far too strong for the Down outfit, and throughout the 70 minutes Andrew Walker’s charges were in total control.  Having said that, the opening fifteen minutes of the contest were evenly fought, but once John Poole’s quickly taken free found Gareth Stranaghan lurking at the back post the avalanche of goals began.  Two minutes later the same two players combined again with the same result, Stranaghan plodding home at the far post.  The visitors did mount some attacks but the fourths defence of Patrick McMillan, Duncan Morris, the returning Glenn Stranaghan and Michael Claney held firm.  John Poole then added two quality strikes before the interval, one of which he rolled back the years following a quick counter attack as he rounded the Down custodian and fired home.

The second half continued in the same manner, with Bangor pressing back the Down defence.  Keith Mulholland and Stevie Robinson in midfield where by now instrumental in the home sides probings, and following some neat interchanging and passing the lead was increased.  First Poole notched his hat trick to make it five, and then Stranaghan soon followed when he flashed home from the top of the circle.  The seventh was scored when Poole, yet again, found Stranaghan who could not miss from a yard out.  Finally Mulholland got his name on the scoresheet with a nifty finish past the hapless Down goalie, a just reward for his industry throughout.

All in all a better performance from the fourths following the lethargy in recent weeks.  No doubt the reverse fixture in Downpatrick on the shale later in the season will be a closer affair.

Many thanks to Timmy Campbell for umpiring duties.
