Raphoe 0 v 1 Bangor

Bangor 4ths travelled to Raphoe last Saturday and deservedly beat Raphoe 3rds 1-0 in the Junior Shield. The normally youthful 4ths had a number of personnel changes due to the schoolboys having a fixture in Ards on Saturday morning.

Undeterred Bangor started the match at a fast pace and for the first 20 minutes Raphoe struggled to match the neat fast inter play of the Bangor midfield of Brennan, McCausland and Irvine. Such was Bangor’s dominance that goalkeeper Craig, playing his first competitive match for the club having previously played rugby, was a virtual spectator. During this spell the Bangor attack lead by McIlhagga were creating problems for the Raphoe defence. From their first corner Bangor brought a great save from the goalie. Bangor continued to press forward and after a number of short corner efforts, a neat switch from McCausland back to McIlhagga brought a fine reaction save from the Raphoe goalie. Eventually, Raphoe found a foothold into the game in the final 10 minutes of the first half but resolute defending from Garland, Stubbings, Coughlin and Martin thwarted any real chances at goal. On the one occasion that Raphoe did break through Craig made a fine advancing save to repel the danger.

Half Time 0-0

Bangor again began the second half at a fast pace and at this point the Raphoe supporters were beginning to become agitated. Bangor continued to create chances but were foiled by the goalie. However, eventually the goal came when good interplay in midfield involving Brennan and McCausland lead to McIlhagga finding space in the circle and McCausland’s fine pass was swept instantly into the net. With Bangor now in total control they created a number of chances to seal the win but were thwarted by either good goalkeeping or the woodwork. In the fine 10 minutes Raphoe began to gain a foothold but again excellent defending from the Bangor rearguard, well marshalled by Coughlin, prevented any danger. Finally, when they did beat the defence they could not find a way past Craig, who on the day was inspired, when he produced two fine instinctive saves to maintain the Bangor advantage.

An excellent team performance with everyone playing their part. Notable performances especially from McCausland in midfield well supported by Brennan and Irvine. Up front as ever McIlhagga proved difficult to mark and control with his fast and skilful stick work. The defence was strong with little opportunities for the Raphoe forwards.

However, man of the match was Nick Craig who on the day proved unbeatable when called into action.

Well done to everyone and let’s maintain this in the league and cup matches for the remainder of the season.
