Bangor 5 v 1 Mossley

On Saturday, the 3rds entertained Mossley 3rds. Having had two disappointing results so far this season, and a defence leaking goals, Bangor knew the game had to be taken to the opposition. The midfield of Boyd, Coughlin and Tweed set about immediately passing the ball superbly, leaving Mossley unable to make any type of impact on the game. The forward line of McIllhagga, Harper and Mulholland created space and their movements were rewarded when they won the first short corner of the game. Toogood, playing sweeper, stepped up and knocked it in. With Bangor playing well, and the defence of Coughlin, Toogood, McDowell and Brennan not giving anything away, it was a matter of time before Bangor scored again. This time, McIllhagga finished off a flowing team move with a thunderous shot high into the net. By half time it was three nil, after Harper scored following another flowing move.

In the second half, Bangor were put under pressure for the first time. The opposition pressed the Bangor midfield and put in some tough tackles. However, this seemed to spur Bangor on, as they continued to create chances. Mossley had their first effort on goal halfway through the second period, thanks to some interesting Bangor passing. However, Irvine in the Bangor goal saved well.

Toogood scored his second and Bangor’s fourth with another sweetly struck short corner and then Mulholland scored Bangor’s fifth after good work from McIllhagga and Harper. Mossley scored a consoliation from a short corner to rob Bangor of the clean sheet they desired. Bangor could have had more goals but a mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping prevented this.

All in all, it was a good result, and an even better performance and a first win for their new captain Michael Coughlin, setting the team up nicely for this weekends trip to Annadale.
