Bangor 8 v 2 Queens

Bangor 2nd XI entertained QUB 2nd XI in the Irish Junior Cup, at a blustery Ballykilaire on Saturday.  Much of the pre-match banter in the changing room consisted of how many, with no one contemplating losing, as the two sides lined up this seemed to be justified as the visitors had only 9 players.

With the match under way it wasn't long before Bangor took the lead through Ryan Whiteside, deflecting an accurate pass from McNaught in at the far post.  This was quickly followed by McClune pouncing on a save from the ever busy Queens 'keeper, this time he found the back of the net.

With the score at 2-0 and Bangor dominant, the rest of the Queens team turned up, relieved to be only 2 adrift.  With both teams at full strength Bangor were still encamped in the final 3rd of the pitch, with the 3rd goal coming from Gowdy, again lurking on the far post. The 4th, and possibly the best of the game came from Macafee, with a typical powerful run from the left of midfield cutting across the top of the circle and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner.

4-0 at half time, and talk was of double figures.

Queens came out fighting in the 2nd half, and got themselves a goal back, courtesy of some hesitance in the Bangor rear guard.  This seemed to spur Bangor on, within minutes 'skipper Scales' had restored the 4 goal advantage, closely followed by McNaught's first, a tap in in front of goal after some excellent work on the left by Whiteside.

Queens then had a rare attack, from which they won a short corner, which they duly dispatched in the corner of the goal, score 6-2. McNaught and Macafee then added a further goal each to cap off an 8-2 victory, albeit against a weak QUB 2nd XI.

Bangor must try and cut out the unforced mistakes for the sterner tests which will undoubtedly lie ahead!
