Bangor 0 v 2 Cork Harlequins

In miserable conditions on Saturday Bangor contested the quarter final of Irish Junior cup against the much fancied side of Cork Harlequins. Going into the game as slight underdogs the home dressing room was filled with a nervous tension matched only by a determination to overcome what would no doubt be the toughest test of the season so far.

There was a tentative start to the match with the Munster side perhaps having the better of the play creating several gilt edged chances which however threatening failed to give Thompson in the Bangor goal any undue cause for concern.
The nervous start was soon replaced with some good passing movements and the defence of Irwin, Gowdy, Scales and McCausland proved a solid foundation from which the rest of the team could launch a more expansive and adventurous style of play.

Bangor began to impose themselves more on the game and chances arose for Stranaghan and McAfee good work from the Cork keeper maintained an even score line.
Ultimately the first half ended scoreless and neither side had really secured the upper hand.

The second half started well for the home side as they continued to press forward, winning penalty corners and creating chances. Unfortunately they couldn’t capitalise on these chances and were left to rue several missed chances.
Conditions deteriorated and the players had to take a short recess and following this Bangor’s momentum was fatally affected. This gave the Cork side a chance to re-group and they returned looking much more like the threat they were initially perceived to be.

Finally the deadlock was broken when from a free hit at the top of the circle a Cork player passed to his team mate and he speculatively flicked the ball through a crowd of players and found the corner of the goal, having caught the keeper unaware.
Cork continued to pile on the pressure and this was rewarded with a second goal from a short corner.
Bangor to their credit continued to press but alas it was not to be their day and their exit from this prestigious competition was sealed.
