Bangor 2 v 2 Lisnagarvey |
|
Last Saturday Bangor hosted Lisnagarvey in the league
and while a share of the spoils was a fair result it did come about in
strange circumstances.
With the game just five minutes old Michael Harte
showed all his cricketing expertise by half-volleying an effort on goal
that Lisnagarvey goalkeeper David Williamson did well to stop.
But Williamson stayed down and it transpired that the
point blank shot had struck him directly on the helmet and knocked him
unconscious. After a few minutes he came round but it was clear he could
not continue. Defender Ian Davidson bravely stepped into the breach and
the games was re-started after a lengthy delay.
If anything, this urged Lisnagarvey to work
harder and they took the lead midway through the half when a Ben Toland
penalty corner could only be deflected into his own goal by Harte.
Finally, Bangor awoke and realised that despite a
novice goalkeeper, Lisnagarvey would not be a pushover. They drew level
with the move of the match with Harte, who was involved in everything,
latched onto a superb quick free-hit from Stephen McClean and then
played in Chris Campbell. He turned well and found Simon Hunter at the
back post for a straight forward tap-in.
Bangor's lead was extended just before the break when
from a penalty corner Mark Lappin was given space and time to pick his
spot and he joyously took it against his former club.
Following the interval Bangor once again let their
standards slip and could not muster a single serious shot on goal during
the second half. Lisnagarvey did a lot better and John Tormey and his
defence were repeatedly tested until just seven minutes from time when
they caved. Cameron Black latching onto a long pass, rounding Tormey and
finishing into the empty net.
Despite the strange circumstances of the game the
point was well earned against the ever organised and well disciplined
Lisburn side.
