Newry 3rds 3-0 Bangor 6ths

AWAY DEFEAT FOR BANGOR

The Sixths travelled to Newry on Saturday, but were beaten 3-0 by a superior team on the day.

Bangor didn’t start brightly as they have in other games, and the whole first half was played in Bangor’s half of the pitch.  Newry were constantly attacking, but Duncan Morris, Ryan Agnew, Adam Douglas and Craig McDowell were doing their best to hold them off.  Newry got through a few times, and a couple of great saves from goalkeeper Mark Russell kept the game at 0-0.  Though this wasn’t enough, and Newry’s constant pressure paid off.  The ball was passed to the top of the circle, and their centre forward beat a Bangor player and smashed it into the bottom corner.

This made Bangor push forward and Phil Campbell supplied Thomas Crawford with some good passes, but he never had the time to get a shot away.  David Titmus also went close on occasions, but could not find the net.  Newry then broke again and their forward dispatched a shot that was headed for the top corner, but ‘keeper Russell got a hand to it and pushed it wide.

In the second half Bangor tried to press forward with Niall McEvoy and Ricky Blayney making some good forward runs, but Newry were just too good at cutting out any passes that came from these.  Colin McIlhagga tried to make a run from the halfway line, but once he hit their circle he was tackled, just before he could get his shot away.  Newry started to attack again, and the ball was given away by a Bangor player at the top of the circle, and the Newry forward did not need an invitation to shoot, 2-0 Newry.

Bangor threw everyone forward in the hope of rescuing something from the game, and after Thomas Crawford shot and went close, the ball broke to Newry who scored to put the game beyond any doubt.

Man of the Match was Mark Russell, who made some great saves in the first half.  Thanks to everyone for travelling to Newry.
