Saturday saw the fortieth game for Bangor
fifths under the guidance of John Mitchell and Simon Murray, and it was
their biggest test yet.
A real four pointer, against a very physical Mossley side who were close
in second behind the league leaders Bangor. A team who had beat the fifths
2-1 at the Glade earlier in the season.
The visitors took the game to Bangor in the opening exchanges why; with
experience and a physical nature they gained a few early short corners,
and forced Niall McEvoy into a few early saves.
At the other end the fifths got their attacking momentum going, and the
first telling effort brought a sublime goal. Simon Murray drilled the ball
in from the right, and Mike Ferguson used his predatory instincts to get
in position to deflect the ball into the top corner on the reverse, a
fantastic goal.
Soon after Calum Togneri capitalised from a cross after good work from
Gerry Hamill, Calum slammed home to double the home sides advantage.
Five minutes from the interval Robin McCreadys pinpoint pass found Paddy
McCalister to make it 3-0 and the fifths were cruising.
Mitchell was under no illusion; the second would be very difficult, with
Mossley up for it.
In an unbelievable second half, the travelling umpire gave his side no
fewer than 20 short corners, and the Bangor defence was phenomenal only
conceding two. The attack was relentless; Warren Reid having Bangor's only
half chance from open play, Matty Neill McCready went close from a Bangor
short.
Other than that the home side were almost always pinned back into their
own half, with the umpire seemingly only ever giving the short and nothing
else. The defence of Niall, Robin, Matty, Dale Kirkpatrick, and Allan
Stevenson were amazing, and effectively won the fifths the game.
Final score 3-2 to Bangor to keep this great run going. Man of the match
was the whole team, attacking prowess in the first half, and defensive
brilliance in the second keeps the fifths top and many thanks to Chris
Harte for umpiring.
