Bangor 5ths 7 v 0 Queens 2nds

CONVINCING WIN FOR BANGOR

Bangor fifths ran out easy 7-0 winners over Queens University second string at Ballyk on Saturday. Second by name and second by nature, there was only one team in it from the start, the fifths showed the students how real hockey is played in Corporate Coaching Junior 5, scoring, as they did against Cookstown two weeks previous, three goals in the first 10 minutes. Fast pace attacking, plenty of passing and clinical finishing, this is how the fifths do it, and the first goal was just that, Gerry Hamill bursting down the right and crossing the ball for Bob Espey to grab a beautiful goal, from a yard out. It was 2-0 soon after, Harper made a nuisance of himself tackling a Queens midfielder just inside the visitors half, then made a clear run to the goal and beat the onrushing keeper by flicking it over him to hit the top of the backboard. The third was a typical bit of good physical graft, Espey holding off the attentions of his marker and slapping the ball low passed the keeper.

The last five minutes saw Bangor stretch their lead further, Harpers’ second came from a short a corner which was passed to Jonathon Todd whose shot was saved but predatory Harper dived in between two defenders and poked the rebound between the keepers legs. Another short corner paid dividends after pusher Hamill exchanged passes with John Mitchell and then crossed for Harper to deflect in for his first Hat-Trick of the season.

5-0 at half time and after an easy first half there wasn’t much concentration on the team talk and this lack of focus showed in the second half.

Dave Stewart was brought into action the odd time, making strong challenges to protect his clean sheet.

Good work from the midfield trio of Paul Scott, Todd and debutant Mark Campbell saw the ball spread around nicely and on the end of the flowing move Espey grabbing his Hat-trick hammering the ball under the hapless keeper to make it 6-0.

Bangor lost their shape in the second half and invited Queens to attack, though they could not muster a goal with Allan Stevenson and Paddy McCalister in close attention. The highlight of a guest appearance at sweeper from Chris McConkey was a swashbuckling run, the entire length of the pitch, driving past the students defense, who were in awe of this determined run, and slipping the ball across the keeper into the bottom left corner of the goal to round up the scoring making it 7-0.

In form Bob Espey was awarded the man of the match with his Hat-trick and powerful display.

Many thanks to Jeremy McAfee, Andrew McIllhagga, Mark Russell and Adam Douglas for umpiring.
