Queens University 2nds 0 v 3 Bangor 6ths

Bangor fifths made sure they took all 4 points against QUB seconds this season, with a 3-0 win at the DUB on Saturday.

The league leaders were worried at the sight of ex-Bangor player Andy Spratt, who won the linden cup with QUB firsts this month, turning out for the seconds.

The match started at the expected fast pace, Mark Dornan did well to keep Spratt quiet early on. After chances for both teams it was Bangor who took the lead after a mazy run from Neill-McCready a short corner was awarded, Hamill pushed out to Matty, who couldn’t get his shot away but poked the ball to Paul Scott whose unorthodox but beautiful reverse stick flick sailed into the top corner to stun Queens and put Bangor into the lead. This was the roaming centre midfielders’ fourth for the fifths this season.

Young Dale Kirkpatrick showed a solid display of defending, dispossessing his older brothers friend Spratt on numerous occasions.

Queens danger men, Richard McConkey and Spratt then tested Bangor keeper McEvoy with powerful flicks from a succession of short corners, but Niall, determined to keep a clean sheet stood up to the task at hand, keeping the attackers at bay.

After good work from Scott and Murray in the midfield, the ball broke loose in the area and Michael Ferguson pounced for his first for the fifths this season to make it 2-0, he then nearly scored the goal of the season, wandering across the field from the left past two defenders, unleashing a beast of a shot hitting the top corner of the net, unfortunately the wrong side of the upright.

Soon after Scott released Hamill, whose blinding pace gave him ample time to pick out Calum Togneri at the back post to make it 3-0. Giving the BGS forward his third goal in four games for the fifths since returning from injury.

So at half time Gerry pointed out as usual, the lack of giving him the ball even though it proves fruitful when he gets it.

QUB came out stronger in the second half, but their finishing was lacklustre, their best chance coming when a cross bobbled of Robin McCready’s stick and the McConkey blazed his volleyed shot over the bar when he had an open goal to aim at.

Bob Espey almost made it four but his effort cannoned off the post and out of play, Togneri almost grabbed his second of the match, though his effort flew just over the crossbar.

3-0 it finished. The fifths can be pleased with their performance and clean sheet. Excellent performances from many players but Dale Kirkpatrick picked up a deserved man of the match award. The fifths have a bye in the cup this week and play promotion hunters Mossley 4s at Ballyk next.
