GREAT AWAY WIN FOR BANGOR Having had their game moved to Friday night for television coverage Bangor fifths travelled to play Lisnagarvey sixths at their state of the art new facilities, six days after having a great result against ‘garvey fifths. Anyone who thought this would be an easy game was wrong, the home side have already beat their fifths in the league this year, and they were on their own turf, water based at that, not the mighty fifths favoured surface. Tough it was but the fifths nabbed two great points after a hard fought 2-1 victory. Having just negotiated a new contract, Paul Scott was determined to show his worth to the cause, and started to show people how to rock the midfield, on the defensive side, his nuisance jab tackling and getting in the way were valuable, but on the attacking side his foraging runs looked certain to end in goals. In the Bangor goal Niall Mcevoy was tested early on, on his fifths debut, but was hardly troubled. The defensive quartet of R McConkey, McCready, Neill-McCready and Stevenson were excellent on this new pitch even facing a poorly placed colourful church and firework display. Patrick McAlister was pushed up into midfield for this game, and was supreme, a masterful display of skill and passing ability. Upfront Harper had a frustrating time but worked tirelessly. It was Scott though who broke the deadlock, 17 minutes in, a break down the middle, to the bi-line, left of the goal, having decided no-one was in a good position to pass to he decided a push passed the keeper was most fruitful, his second of the season kept Bangor ahead up to half time. The wingers at half time complained of lack of use, so the action plan from Captain Mitchell was not to let Garvey back in the game and use the wings more. Having ignored what was just said the fifths went out didn’t use the wings much more and conceded within 7 minutes of the restart, a move broke down in the midfield and was moved out left by the Garvey attack, having left his marker for dead the left winger slotted home, to the obvious delight of the home team. This was a tough test for the fifths and they really had to work hard to get back in front, which they did, McAlister moved purposely through the midfield and made the pass right to Murray, who found Gerry Hamill on the wing whose cross couldn’t be finished by Harper, but was expertly finished off by Mark Campbell for his second for the fifths, trickling passed the home keeper and across the goal line. Bangor made a few more chances, most notably Harper whose inventive effort cannoned off the frame of the goal after being blasted in by McAlister. 2-1 it finished, and a good away win for the fifths. Man of the match was in no doubt, Paddy Mac. Thanks to Mark Russell for umpiring. |
