Bangor fourths travelled to Lisburn
on Saturday to play South Antrim and were beaten 4-0. A disappointing
result after the previous week's result against Instonians.
Despite the captain's warning before the game to ignore the league
position of the teams Bangor were slow out of the blocks. A number of
South Antrim attacks were the result of strong running from their midfield
which Bangor initially struggled to cope with.
From one of these attacks South took the lead when their centre forward
managed to force the ball past McEvoy, the Bangor goalkeeper, despite two
good initial saves from the goalkeeper.
This seemed to spur Bangor on and from their first corner they were
unlucky when after the ball struck a defender on the line only a long
corner resulted. At this point play became disjointed after a South player
was sin-binned for striking Campbell and Garland was lucky to remain on
the pitch when he went to Campbell's defence. The half finished with
Bangor creating a chance for Harper who was unable to test the goalkeeper.
Bangor introduced McIlhagga after the break and played a 4-4-2 formation
and immediately they began to dominate the play. McIlhagga was causing the
South defence a number of problems and from a quick attack down the right
wing he won a short corner. From the resulting corner Bangor struck the
inside of the post but the ball bounced across the goal line to safety.
At this point Bangor were in the ascendancy but McIlhagga had to leave the
pitch after being struck on the foot with the ball. South were limited to
breakaways at this point and from a harsh decision won a corner. This
produced a good shot which struck Ferguson on the foot and the resulting
penalty stroke was converted. To their credit Bangor continued to find a
way back into the game but to further late goals left the score line 4-0
in South's favour.
The team must regroup and ensure that they return to winning ways quickly.
They still remain top of the table but this result again brings other
sides back into the promotion race.
