The seconds entertained South Antrim seconds in Round 2 of this season’s McClements Cup at Bangor Sportsplex last Saturday afternoon. After a stuttering start from the home side, the seconds eventually progressed putting 5 goals past the visitors in a match they dominated once they made the vital breakthrough in the 32nd minute. Up until this stage the visitors did pose a threat, as the Bangor side were not fluent in their play. This first goal was scored when Walker picked out debutant Lyall on the counter attack, the nippy winger then drew the defender and passed to Stranaghan who slipped past the advancing South Antrim goalie. The second half was dominated by the home side, and they duly went on to add a further four goals. Five minutes into the half a McNaught snapshot was deflected home by his strike partner Stranaghan for his and his sides second, and Scales added a third after being teed up by Lyall who had got in behind the visitors defence. The fourth goal came from a penalty corner when that man McMillan popped up again at the setpiece to score from the rebound. The best goal of the contest was the last when Irwin, returning to the side following injury, picked out McNaught with a 25 yard pass and the forward deftly finished past the hapless South Antrim goalie. The visitors did create one or two opportunities in the second period, but found the home defence and in particular another debutant for the seconds, Stewart, in the home goal alert to thwart any danger. A scrappy affair when all said and done, but the seconds reward for their victory is a place in the last eight, this time against South Antrim 1st XI at the end of the month in Lisburn. Without doubt this will prove a sterner test. Player of the match for the seconds was Jonny McNaught, David Lyall a close second. Many thanks to Bill Gowdy and Dave McClune for umpiring. Team: Stewart, Irwin, Gowdy, McCausland P., Toogood, Scales, Walker, Tweed, Lyall, McNaught, Stranaghan, McMillan, McIlhagga. |
